Cambodia Trip 2011
Every two years the College runs a trip in conjunction with Antipodeans Abroad. Our trip in 2011 will be to Cambodia. It will be run in the June/July holidays. The proposed departure date is Friday 17th June and the return date is Friday 8th July. Last year we went to Vietnam and 21 students participated in the trip.
The philosophy of this trip is that the students take an active part in the expedition, learn leadership skills and along with other team members, be responsible for the welfare of the expedition under the supervision of the experienced Expedition Leaders.
The highlight of the trip is definitely our community service project in a small Cambodian village over 4-5 days. The team will raise money prior to departure to fund the project. Some of the previous projects the College has completed include painting classrooms, building an amenities block, purchasing equipment for the school.
Some of the highlights of the 2011 trip to Cambodia will include:
- village community project & immersion experience
- trekking and staying in village communities
and visits to sites including:
- Siem Reap & Phnom Penh
- the Angkor Temples
- S21, Killing Fields
- Sihanoukville Beach,
- markets, bazaars, temples and palaces.
The parent information evening will be on 16th February at 6.00pm in the AD4. If you would like more information please contact Michelle Moore mmoore@flc.qld.edu.au or Robern Hinchliffe rhinchliffe@flc.qld.edu.au.
Great OP success for FLC
The class of 2009 Year 12 students has done Forest Lake College proud with outstanding OP results announced on January 14.
From a cohort of 88 students there were 17 students who received an OP of 1-5 and 41 who scored an OP of 10 or better.
2009 school captain, Shannon O’Beirne and dux, Michael Reed both achieved and OP of 1, the top mark available in Queensland schools.
The results capped a fine year for both Shannon and Michael; each had already received University of Queensland Academic Excellence scholarships (valued at $24 thousand each) for 2010.
Shannon will fulfil a lifelong dream when she starts her degree in medicine at UQ while Michael will join her at St Lucia when he commences a double degree in science and mechanical engineering.
