Middle School - Years 7 to 9

Middle School is an important stage of children’s development where attention to student welfare is a priority. As students move through this unique time in their lives they will be challenged by a range of changes – physical, cognitive, social and emotional – that are characteristic of adolescence. The importance of building relationships with peers and teachers in the community cannot be underestimated. Core teachers teaching two and three subjects and the house based student welfare structures provide a very high level of support and encouragement for young people on an individual basis. Students meet with the Pastoral Care Teacher every day. This valuable time provides the opportunity for student welfare and personalized attention and support.

The Middle Schools is a time when choice in a broadening range challenging academic and cultural and sporting programs is introduced. The learning environment is focused on academic rigour and continuing development of literacy and numeracy skills. Programs introducing students to the study of the Common Curriculum Elements in preparation for senior schooling are included in this phase of learning. As students grow toward independence and self reliance, flexible arrangements such as unitized courses and multi-aged approaches may be used to cater for their diverse learning needs.
